Gundog training

Gundog training

Even if you never intend to work your dog, Gundog training gives you an amazing hobby, and a well controlled dog when out and about in the countryside or on our fabulous Cornish beaches.

The gundog breeds – retrievers, spaniels, HPRs - are very popular breeds to keep as pets, and they often make great pets, but sometimes not without challenges

Most gundog breeds have some strong hunting instincts – including some retrievers although often (but not always!) less so than the others – and taking them for a relaxing walk in the countryside may be great fun for the dog, but not so relaxing for the owner!

To get the most from gundog breed pet, whether walks in the countryside are a challenge or not, having some form of dog sports as a hobby can be of immense help.

Dog sports as a hobby not only provides you and your dog with a satisfying pastime but helps when exercise needs to be carefully managed, particularly for younger dogs and those with strong hunting instincts.

Of course, this dog sport doesn’t have to be gundog work. My gundogs also do Scentwork, Hoopers, and play Treiball for fun! All advanced training programmes build a fantastic bond with your dog, controlled exercise, and useful trained responses to cues.

Gundog training is of particular help though, it allows you to control and harness the natural drives of your pet Gundog breed, and teaching your dog to listen to you in very distracting environments is a big part of Gundog training.

Gundog training includes teaching your dog to:

  • carry out first basic and then very advanced retrieves;
  • walk off lead at heel;
  • hold a position in the face of distractions;
  • follow cues at great distances;
  • recall in the face of distractions;
  • hunt small areas, and large areas (and stop hunting when asked);
  • stop even when very far away.

You can see that, even if you never intend to work your dog on a shoot, how training these things would give you a well controlled dog when out and about in the countryside or on our fabulous Cornish beaches.

Having previously not had good experiences with "Gundog trainers" I was a bit anxious to try again. However, as soon as I met Heather Julie at Beanie Farm I knew I had found the right kind of positive trainer to work with. She is so very experienced, patient, and explains things really clearly.

The fields at Beanie Farm where she does the training are amazing, and very easy to find from the A30. There is an undercover area where you can sit and ask questions and have the session explained. She gives you things to work on in-between sessions and then has a re-cap at the start of the next one, working on any problem areas and offers advice on how to move forward.

In a short space of time, I learned so much but most importantly, my dog loved the sessions just as much as I did, and we couldn't wait until the next one.
